How can I Effectively Market to Individuals with Disabilities?

We know that everyone approaches marketing differently…some organizations may launch comprehensive promotional campaigns, while others may not budget any funds for formal marketing.  Whatever your organizational approach may be, we encourage you to reach out to the disability community.

People with disabilities represent the largest minority population in America.  By not including this population you will effectively turn your back on a multitude of highly entrepreneurial clients.  In fact, if your organization is serious about offering microenterprise services to promising entrepreneurs with disabilities and the agencies who serve them, then you need to get affirmative and aggressive with your marketing materials.

Marketing Suggestions:

  1. Use images that positively depict disability in your marketing materials, both printed and on the web
  2. Use phrases such as “…and Persons with Disabilities…” in all descriptions of the populations your organization serves.  Click here for more information about the language of disability
  3. Ensure that your website is accessible because many times that is the first experience your clientele have with your organization

In order to reach the disability community here are some ideas about where to market your services:

  • State Vocational Rehabilitation Administration office
  • Local Vocational Rehabilitation counselor’s office in your service area
  • Centers for Independent Living
  • Veterans Administration (offices and hospitals)
  • State politicians offices
  • Anywhere your organization typically markets
